The frontispiece is by Marcia Oakes Woodbury (1865-1913). Born like Jewett in South Berwick, Maine, Woodbury studied painting in New York and Paris. Her paintings, "Triptych" and "Mother and Daughter," belong to the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. She and her husband, Charles H. Woodbury (1864-1940), also an artist, were friends of Jewett. Together they designed illustrations for a Holiday Edition of Deephaven that appeared in 1893 (Cary, Sarah Orne Jewett Letters, p. 85).
