These illustrations appeared Ladies' Home Journal (8:1-2, December 1890 and 8:5, January 1891). They are by William Ladd Taylor (1854-1926). Taylor was a popular illustrator for The Ladies' Home Journal and other magazines. Some of his best work is collected in Our Home and Country (1908). It has proven difficult to obtain access to paper copies of this story and, therefore, the quality of these illustrations varies. The first two drawings were obtained courtesy of the DeWitt Wallace Library of Macalester College, St. Paul, MN, by photographing a microfilm viewing screen with a Konica Q-Mini digital camera.
